Children's Book-Shooting Sun Hero, Children's Book II, 2012 Spring

Children's Book是我拿到2年課程表中,最期待的一堂課。
用一整個學期的課,完成一本童書。
老師很隨性說可以畫任何我們想畫的故事或是傳說,於是我決定用這個機會還畫有關台灣的故事。
我很認真地研究了許多原住民的故事,最後布農族的射日英雄雀屏中選:)
就直接先介紹一下這本書跟故事吧!
The first time when I got my 2-year syllabus, "Children's Book" is one of the exciting classes for me.
We used the whole semester to finish a children's book.
My Professor was an easy-going person, and she allowed us to draw any topics or tales we like. I decided to draw a Taiwanese tale :)
After I did some researchs for Taiwanese aborigine tales, I chose a tale of Bunun Tribe, which was quite interesting.

Once upon a time, there were two suns.
很久很久以前,有兩個太陽。

When one sun set, the other sun rose. There were no differences between day and night.
當一個太陽下山,另一個太陽便升起,所以當時並沒有日夜之分。

**教授說,右邊的太陽的眼神要看著左邊太陽,要確認它有沒有下山。這個小細節已經關乎到觀者細微的情緒感受!薑是老的辣:P
Professor mentioned about the sun on the right side should peer to the sun on the left side to ensure it had already set. This minor detail was about the emotional confines of viewers. She pointed out something very important!

Many People died because they were over-exposed to the sun.
許多人因此被曬死。 

**由是童書,我不想將死亡畫得過度悲傷。這頁的小動物我畫得很開心,但想到他們失去生命,還是有點淡淡的感傷。
別堂課的教授說他很喜歡我整本書的圖騰及重複元素,感覺可以拿來作家飾用品。他舉例說,像這頁作成毯子也不錯。但我有點尷尬的說,可是這頁大家都死了...哈哈,可能是畫面太祥和了,感覺不到死亡。真不知是好還是壞??
Since it was a children's book, I didn't want to over-emphasize death in a sad way. I enjoyed drawing little animals in this page, however, I still felt a little bad for their death.
The professor from the other class told me that he liked my patterns and repeating elements in my book, and they might be used for furnishing. For examples, the image in this page could be a rug design. I told him embrarrassingly that people died in this page...haha maybe they looked too peaceful so he didn't think of death. Was it good or bad??

The chieftain was so mad! He sent several warriors to bring bows and arrows,
頭目非常地生氣!他召集了許多勇士帶著弓和箭,

**這頁說實話,我個人覺得還蠻像電玩一開始要選角色,哈哈哈。
To be honest, personally I thought that it looked like you were choosing the character while you were playing video games, haha.

Each of them carried a boy on his back forward the east to avenge their tribe.
每個勇士背著一個男娃,朝東方前進為部落報仇。

**然後遊戲開始,哈哈哈:D我還蠻喜歡每個勇者背著一個孩子的情節,以防父親過世還有兒子可以出任務,先人想的很周到:)
Haha, Game starts! BTW, I really like why the warriors also carried boys in order to continue the mission if their fathers were dead. It was very thoughtful.

One of the warriors, named Brave, seeded trees on the way to the east in order to let his son find his way home by following the trees.
其中有位叫必勇的勇士,他沿著向東方的路撒下種子,好讓他的兒子可以尋著樹找到回家的路。

** 這是我相當喜歡的一頁,包括構圖顏色跟圖騰。撒種子的概念跟糖果屋撒麵包很像:)
This is my favorite page in the book, including the composition, colors and patterns. Seeding trees is similar to Hansel and Gretel casting crumbs:)

Brave and his son surmounted cliffs and mountains for several years, and finally they found the sun.
必勇父子翻山越嶺多年,最後他終於找到太陽了。

**耶~辛苦他們了,終於找到囉:)我很喜歡這耶可愛山
Yeah, finally, they found it :) I love mountains in this page

Brave shot he sun, but he only shot one of its eyes.
必勇射了太陽,但只射中太陽的一支眼。

**一開始我很擔心這個畫面對小朋友來說會不會太血腥,但我美國的同學們(年輕人,小我很多)一派輕鬆的說,這完全不會啊!然後舉了一堆他們看過見血的童書(這可能真的是小兒科吧)
In the beginning, I was worried about whether it is too bloody for kids, but my classmates (very young) told me not at all! They also told me lots of bloody children's books.

The sun used one hand to press its hurt eye, and used the other hand to hold the father and his son.
The sun asked, "Why did you hurt me?"
太陽用一隻手壓著受傷的眼睛, 並用另一支手抓著父子。太陽問到,「你們為什麼要傷害我?」

**指導教授看到這一頁一直笑,她說讓她想起有一次坐Subway,有兩個墨西哥人沒趕上車在月台又吼又叫的樣子XD
When my professor saw this page, she laughed. She said that it made her think of one day she saw two Mexican, who couldn’t get on the subway, yelled at the train.

Brave answered, "Because of you, many people died, and now it's time for revenge!"
必勇回答,「因為你害死了許多人,現在式復仇的時候了!」

“You are so ungratful,” the sun signed,
"I gave you sunshine to plant but you never thanked me. However, I understand the pain of losing family."
太陽嘆著氣說,「你們真是不知感恩。我賜予你們陽光種植,你們卻沒有感謝我。但我知道失去親人的痛苦。」

“What should we do?” Brave asked.
"All right, I'll become a moon, but you should tell your tribe to remember to worship me every month when I become the full moon."
「我們該怎麼做呢?」必勇問道。
「這要吧,我將成為月亮,但你必須告訴你的族人每個月要祭祀我,當我滿月時。」 

**我很喜歡畫月亮的盈缺:D黃色配紫色還有白點點真漂亮~

"If you follow what I said, your tribe will blossom and timely wind and rain will bring good harvest.
Seed the seed and use millet to worship me. Use the chicken to tell time."
「如果你們照著我所說的去做,你們部落將會風調雨順。
用這些種子所栽種的小米來祭祀我,用雞來報時。」

Brave recieved the seeds and the chicken from the sun and said goodbye to the sun.
The trees had already grown, and Brave and his sun followed the trees to get home.
必勇收下從太陽那得到的種子與雞,便與太陽告別了。
那些樹也已經長大了,必勇父子沿著樹,朝著回家的路前進。

**這頁我也很喜歡,在學校掃描時,路人經過還跟我說"So Beautiful~":D
比較之前是必勇牽著兒子,現在換成兒子牽著必勇,真感人(陶醉)
I really love this page. When I was scanning this page at school, a girl, who was passing by, told me “So beautiful~” :D

When they got home, Brave became a very old man with white hair, stooped over, and his son also had white hair.
Brave described the whole journey to the tribe and handed over the seeds and the chicken.
當他們抵達家鄉時,必勇早已白髮蒼蒼,走路蹣跚,而他的兒子頭髮也花白了。
必勇述說了整個冒險旅程,並將種子與雞交付給族人。

After that, Bunun Tribe use the seeds, which were given by the sun, to plant millet.
They also follow the waing and wanning of the moon to farm and worship.
從此以後,布農族使用太陽所給的種子栽種小米。他們並遵循著月亮的盈缺來種植及祭祀。
